Welcome to Seventh Grade English: The Individual in Society
A note about homework: It is your responsibility to arrive in class with your homework ready to turn in (either handwritten or printed).
Due Thursday (10/17): Actively read chapter 4; brainstorm your creative nonfiction memoir.
Due Wednesday (10/16): Study for vocab quiz. Brainstorm writing territories.
Due Thursday (10/10): Make the remaining vocabulary cards.
Due Wednesday (10/9): Make 7 or 8 vocabulary cards. Due Tuesday (10/8): Actively read chapter 2 and write a short paragraph explaining/exploring the theme of rules/codes. Find a quotation to support your answer. Due Monday (10/7):Create a flash story or a poem incorporating the words we generated from the images we studied today -- you can select a specific image and write from the point of view of someone in the picture, or you can do an overall “feeling” poem/story. This should be NO MORE THAN A PAGE. Please double-space! I have shared the presentation with you, so you can use one or several pictures from there, but you can also click on the link "TKAM Extension" to find more pictures by Dorothea Lange. Due Thursday (10/3): Actively read Chapter 1, and (1) look for any rules, like we talked about in class; (2) look for your assigned character, and (3) don't despair -- this chapter is different from the rest of the book. Harper Lee is mostly building background/context. Due Wednesday (10/2): Make final edits/changes to your essay, based on my feedback and how your idea has evolved. Due Tuesday (10/1): Work on your essay for 30 minutes. Please share it with me in a Google Doc titled "True Diary Your Name." Due Monday (9/30): Start working on your final essay for True Diary. Please come to class with a working thesis that uses two of the archetypes, as well as quotations you plan to use printed out or written down. Due Thursday (9/27): Study for vocab quiz; finish poem. Due Wednesday (9/25): Look over all the writing you've been doing about hope and dreams and write an original poem that hints at your ideas about hope and dreams. Review vocab for quiz on Thursday. Due Tuesday (9/24): Make your final 7 vocabulary cards. Due Monday (9/23): Make 8 vocab cards. Read over the entire list beforehand and determine which sentence will be DD, which will be CON, and which will be EXAM. You should have 5 of each once you're finished making your cards! Due Thursday (9/19): Vocab excersies. Due Wednesday (9/18): Complete the worksheet about hope in The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and write a mini-paragraph. Due Tuesday (9/17): Finish your multi-genre personal narrative. Due Monday (9/16): Work on one piece and start a second OR draft all three piece this weekend and revise Monday night (FINAL due Tuesday 9/17). Due Thursday (9/12): Finish your Body Biography of Junior, keeping in mind the expectations we came up with as a class --
Things to consider for the image of the character: clothing, facial expressions, where things affect the character (head, heart, hands, etc)
Outside*
Inside*
- events that affect the character
- people's actions, words, opinions
- geography, race, culture, religion
- thoughts and feelings
- views of self
- beliefs
*these ideas should be supported with quotations from the text and page numbers Due Wednesday (9/11): Continue working on the rough draft of your body biography of Junior -- find quotations to support your ideas about his internal/external influences, and make sure there are explanations for each of his quotations. Start thinking about how you want to put it all together for your final draft (DUE THURSDAY). Due Tuesday (9/10):Please think about the INTERNAL and EXTERNAL influences in Junior's life and map them out by finding evidence in the book. You can use the little drawing I gave you, or create another way of showing these expectations (like the ones we talked about in class). Due Monday (9/9): (1) class letter signed by your parent/guardian (2) letter to me about your summer and you as an English student.
Due Friday (9/6):In your English notebook, write a personal response to one of the questions we considered in class today (What is a successful individual? What is an unsuccessful individual? What is a successful society? What is an unsuccessful society?) Your response can be a poem, short story, diary entry, or illustration with an accompanying explanation. Write for 30-35 minutes and then stop.
